Maties tops log in Varsity hockey

Maties are currently top the log of the Varsity Cup hockey tournament after the completion of the first leg of the tournament.

They triumphed 2-0 over until-now unbeaten UCT on Monday night to clinch the top spot on the log.

Tuks finally got off the mark, beating a resilient NWU 3-0. UJ narrowly defeated Wits 2-1, but the biggest winner of the day was Kovsies, who annihilated the Madibaz 16-2.

The second leg of the competition commences on Friday 10 May in Potchefstroom. Maties currently tops the log with 12 points, followed by Kovsies and UCT on 9 points, NWU and UJ are on 6 points, Tuks and Wits on 3 points and Madibaz with zero points.

The fourth and final match of the Varsity Hockey weekend was the Cape derby between the old foes, UCT and Maties, who both went undefeated into the clash on Monday night.

A late Paige Phillips goal in the powerplay ensured that Maties went home with the spoils, 2-0 the final score.

Maties had six shots at a goal against the one of the home team in the first quarter but Nepo Serage, the UCT keeper, kept them out. The teams went into halftime with neither being able to break the deadlock.

In the third quarter the Stellenbosch-based team had a goal disallowed and a couple of goalmouth scrambles, but couldn’t get the elusive goal with UCT doing just enough in the D to keep the Maties out.

The defining moment in the match came in the 58th minute when captain Phillips flicked home from a well-worked penalty corner.

On Monday Maties cemented their dominance in the tournament when they put six goals past the Kovsie team.

Maties made no mistake with an early short corner opportunity and Lenta Cullinan slapped one past Kovsies’ keeper Wiane Grobler.

Kovsies were quick to take the lead, with Antonet Louw’s head-directed blow that seem to rattle the Maties keeper!

Spectators had to wait until the second half for more points when Aimee Pote placed Maties right back in the lead. Maties continued their goal-scoring with their skipper Phillips increasing their lead at the end of the third quarter.

In the match against UJ a third-quarter blitzkrieg ensured that Maties trashed UJ 7-0 in their match at UCT on Sunday.
