Netball the big winner at the 2019 Maties Sport Awards

The 2019 Maties Sport Awards was a big evening for Maties Netball, which walked away with various accolades.

Jo Prins, Maties netball captain, walked away with the title Sportswoman of the Year, while David Bedingham (Maties cricket) was named Maties Sportsman of the Year. Athletes Anika Pretorius and Kerwin Noemdo both received awards for Parasport.

The Maties Netball first team was named Team of the Year, and coach Zanele Mdodana got recognition as Team Coach of the Year. Another award grabbed by a netball player was MFM Media Personality of the Year, and this time Sasha-Lee Petersen’s name was called.

Other big award winners were Maties Hockey, which was named Club of the Year, and Heinrich Fortuin walked away as Individual Coach of the Year. It was Prins’ last year as a Matie. And she saved her best for last. In 2019, she won various individual awards and she was a key player in Maties Netball’s most successful season in more than two decades. Since 2015 she represented her institution’s netball at four USSA tournaments and played in four Varsity netball tournaments – including two finals. Prins is also part of the Proteas training squad.

“This award means the world to me,” she said. “It is such a sweet ending to a magnificent season and such a great way to end off a season that had some massive challenges. The maroon dress has been good to me over the years. Thank you, Maties Sport, for making me the person I am today.”

Mdodana said: “I am thankful for this award. It was a team effort, though. Adele [Niemand, assistant coach], you have walked this road with me and to my girls, thank you for making me look good.”

For Noemdo the moment was a bit surreal, but she recovered enough to realise it was bigger than just 2019.

“When I heard my name I was humbled, grateful and thankful. When I picked up the trophy and saw some of the names before me, such as Ernst van Dyk, Charl du Toit, Dyan Buis and Fanie van der Merwe, I realised I must be doing something right! This award is recognition for all the hard work on a road that began with Maties Sport.”

Maties Sport chief director, Ilhaam Groenewald, said: “This year we recognised more than 200 student athletes and coaching and administrative staff for excellence in play and service. Winning on the field of play is the ultimate accolade. It is an acknowledgement of dedication, hard work, gruelling training and ability to juggle the complexities of sport and rigours of academia.

“However, a win on the field also speaks volumes for all our staff behind the scenes – coaches, support staff, administrators and managers – who dedicate themselves, not only to the student athletes in their charge, but also to the broader strategic vision of Maties Sport.”
