New head at SAS Rugby 7s

Former international Sevens’ player and captain, Philip Snyman, has been appointed as the new head of SAS Rugby 7s.

Snyman takes over from Frankie Horne, a former Blitzbok teammate, who managed the SAS Rugby 7s programme for the past three years.

Snyman joined SAS Rugby – the rugby division of the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport – as a coach to the Sevens programme in January.

Jacques Hanekom, head of SAS Rugby says “It was great to have Philip already in our coaching system, and to offer the position to someone of his calibre was an easy decision.”

Accepting the offer wasn’t a difficult choice for Snyman.

“Various factors played a role in my accepting of the job at SAS Rugby. My family is already settled here in Stellenbosch and being close to the South African Sevens setup again played a big role in the final yes,” said Snyman.

“My main goal is to see that the SAS 7s programme becomes a proper feeding source for the SA Sevens Academy…getting players from our programme to one day play for the Blitzboks.”

According to Snyman nothing will make him happier than seeing a SAS 7s player getting a Blitzbok contract. “A Blitzbok coming from the SAS 7s system will be priceless.”

Snyman also shares his dream of one day being involved with the Blitzboks again. “Any player who once was involved in the Blitzbok setup won’t hesitate if the opportunity to get involved again comes around.”

Snyman, who played almost 300 matches for his country, is as level-headed a coach as he was a player.

“I’m not the kind of coach who lets emotions get the better of me. I’m all about hard work, working together and most of all I want my players to see me as honest and sincere.”

When it comes to what his biggest challenge will be as the new head of SAS 7s, Snyman is fast to refer to the administration side of running a programme.

“Admin will be the biggest challenge. Coaching comes naturally, but being in charge of a system is not just about being a coach. It’s about so much more and that is what I am excited about as well.”
