One of the biggest draw cards of the SAS Rugby 7s programme is the opportunity that players get to play against international teams.

Mere weeks into the 2020 programme, and the SAS Rugby 7s squad had the privilege to play against Russia, the French Development as well as the South African Academy teams. Russia and France stayed at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport for a few weeks as part of their season’s schedule, while the South African Sevens system is based at SAS.

Former international Sevens Rugby legend Frankie Horne is the man behind the SAS Rugby 7s programme.

Ambitious players from various countries have joined the programme since it started in 2019. Germany has been the best represented foreign country, while we also welcomed players from Zimbabwe and Israel to the group in 2020.

Even though it is fairly early on in the five-month programme, Horne believes it is one of the best ways to show the players what is expected if they wish to take the next step in their sevens rugby careers.

“I do expect big things from the players early on, but I do give them the basics first. I don’t want them to be perfect, the main goal is to give the players the opportunity to put into action what I show them in video and field sessions,” explained Horne.

“Being a professional rugby sevens’ player is one of the most difficult and challenging ‘jobs’, but also one of the best. When the players are done with the programme, they must be prepared for it all.”
