SAS’s house of world rugby teams

The Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (SAS) hosted not only the current Springboks for the past few weeks, but future Springboks and England players were added to the mix, with the arrival of the SA Schools and England u-18 squads.

SAS has played host to the various South African rugby teams since its inception in 2012, aside from being the headquarters of the Springbok Sevens Men and Women.

“The Springbok training group had a great time at SAS preparing for the Castle Lager Rugby Championship,” said Aled Walters, the Springboks’ Head of Athletic Performance. “All the training fields and facilities are right there within easy reach, which makes planning and preparation so easy and efficient. And the staff are very friendly and helpful as well.”

According to Sean Erasmus, SA Schools coach, it’s not only the SAS facilities that are a great training base, but SAS staff also make a big impact.

“The staff here are always willing to help,” he said. “They want to make life easier for us and make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Add to that the facilities in and around SAS and you have all you need. We have stayed at SAS many times before, and I am sure we will be coming back to SAS many more times in future.”

It is not only the South African teams that use SAS as a training base. Various international teams – such as the England u-18 squad – have over the years found SAS to be an ideal training camp.

Nabil Hassan of the England Rugby Union says: “SAS is a good venue for the squad to prepare for the fixtures during the u-18A International Series, as it gives the players the opportunity to train in an elite sporting environment with first-class facilities surrounded by other international athletes.

‘It also gives them a taste of being in camp during an international tournament; which is invaluable for their development.

“The base is also ideally placed for the players to have down time outside of camp with Stellenbosch town just a few minutes away.”
