Stellies gears up for world tennis

Stellenbosch, which has become a popular venue for hosting international tennis, is bracing itself for three weeks of top-class tennis action, when the Digicall ITF Futures Series is staged at the Maties Tennis Club from 17 November to 9 December.

This is the fourth consecutive year of the tennis series, which sees three back-to-back US$15 000 (±R220 000) ITF tournaments for men and women, giving players the opportunity to earn international ranking points in singles and doubles.

The Maties Tennis Club has hosted the series since 2015, welcoming players from more than 20 countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Mauritius, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Israel, Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Ukraine, Great Britain, Canada and the USA.

Over the last four years the Futures Series has seen some excellent performances from local players, such as rising South African star Lloyd Harris, Davis Cup player Nik Scholtz and the country’s highest ranked world junior Phillip Henning.

All three players recently represented South Africa in the Davis Cup.

In the women’s events South African Fed Cup star, Chanel Simmonds, has consistently played in every single final of each of the tournaments over the last 3 years – winning most of these too.

The dates for each of the 2018 Digicall Futures Series are as follows;

V Week 1 (17 Nov-25 Nov)

V Week 2 (24 Nov-2 Dec)

V Week 3 (1 Dec-9 Dec)

There will be a qualifying event ahead of each tournament.
