Victorians withdraws from WP Rugby

The Victorians section of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club (STFC), the rugby club of Stellenbosch University, is to be withdrawn from the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) competition. Victorians functioned as a separate “club” within the SRFC.

The decision was made by the executive committee of the club after careful consideration of information provided by surveys, and after consulting various stakeholders and players.

The Victorians competed with the Maties in the Super League A of the WPRFU over many years, with four teams each.

This meant Stellenbosch University (SU) had to field eight teams on a weekly basis – three senior teams and a junior team (in the under 20 competition) in each section.

WPRFU bylaws stipulate that clubs competing in the Super Leagues should each have a total of four teams. This means SRFC had to field a total of 184 players per round (23 players per team) – at times even twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

A proposal submitted by the club to the WPRFU to allow the Maties and Victorians teams to play, with three teams each in the WP competitions, was not approved.

SRFC will now field only four teams in the league.

According to a statement by Quintin van Rooyen, SRFC manager, various reasons for the withdrawal were considered, including academic demands, the challenge to field eight teams in the same league, examination and practical schedules of students, and a decline in financial support.

He said: “With the cancellation of our previous sponsor, the overall support for the club’s operations needed to be reviewed to ensure that we have a more sustainable model for the next five years.

“It was necessary for us to identify key resources that we are unable to function without, for example, human resources, transport, medicine and sport science, equipment and apparel, which are all resources that will allow us to continue and sustain our overall league participation and other operations.”
