Young ace back from US for rehab

Rising international tennis star Zoe Kruger (16) came all the way from Florida, America to pursue her rehabilitation of a foot injury at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport, under the watchful eye of performance unit manager Johan van Wyk.

For the last four years, Pretoria-born Kruger and her family have been living in America to make it possible for her and younger sister Isabella (14) to pursue professional tennis playing careers. Zoe and Isabella are the daughters of late Springbok rugby legend Ruben Kruger.

They are based at the world-renowned IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy and coached by Thomas Högstedt, former coach of five-time grand slam champion Maria Sharapova, Eugenie Bouchard and Simona Halep.

Zoe is currently climbing the world rankings.

“I trust the people here at SAS, especially Joe” says Zoe, explaining why she came all the way from the US. She said mutual friends of the Kruger and Van Wyk families had introduced them. They saw certain synergies around the SAS environment and Zoe’s needs regarding her athletic and tennis development.

“It truly is a special and interesting experience staying at SAS,” Zoe said. “The environment is a professional one. You want to train and you want to do it here. I won’t hesitate in recommending SAS to any professional out there.”

“Zoe is an exceptionally positive young person with a ‘nothing is impossible attitude’,” Van Wyk says. “She knows what she wants and understands the basics regarding hard work and putting time into developing, not only as an athlete but also a person. That makes it easy for the team at SAS to help her development and provide direction and advice where needed.”

Isabella is playing in the Curro Junior ITF tournaments from 1 to 15 September, and there is a remote possibility that Zoe may see action in the Digicall Futures from 17 November to 9 December. Both tournaments, co-sponsored by SAS, take place at the Maties Tennis Courts.
