16 Days of Activism launched in Zwelihle

The annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign was launched at the Zwelihle Sports Field on Monday 26 November.

It was hosted by Child Welfare Hermanus, with the Hermanus police and Law Enforcement. Attended by about 120 people, of whom 90 were children between age 5 and 6 from Khanya Crèche, Masibulele Crèche and Zwelihle Primary, it aimed to draw attention to the situation of women and children in Zwelihle. “We as a child protection organisation noticed that there is a high number of children and women being abused by men in their homes,” said Nonopha Gama, a social worker at Child Welfare Hermanus, “so we need to raise awareness.”

“Most cases are not reported by the victims for fear of further victimisation. There is also a lack of information about available support. We hope this year’s event will help children to know what to do if they experience abuse.”

Fadila September, spokesperson for Hermanus police, said parents should always have an eye on their children, especially as they enter the festive season.

She said: “The police station is open for 24 hours to assist victims, and we urge children and adults not to be quiet, but to report an incident immediately. The police will take the necessary steps to assist and provide safety.”

Report all rape, sexual assault and other forms of violence to a local police station or call the toll-free Crime Stop number: 086 00 10111.
