‘21 Messages in a Bottle’ for our ocean
06 September 2018

The future of our oceans and marine life depends on how good we take care of these and the difference we make.

For the last five years White Shark Projects has hosted a blue initiative called 21 Days for the Ocean.

This campaign’s objective is to raise ocean awareness for communities in the Overstrand area.

White Shark Projects will show how some daily activities, although seemingly innocent, can have a negative impact on the ocean. The organisation will show how small changes can help make the ocean healthier.

The event runs for 21 days, from Saturday 1 September to Friday 21 September.

The idea behind the 21 days is that research suggests it takes 21 days for a person to break a bad habit.

The theme for this year will be “21 Messages in a Bottle”.

This means that every day of the event there will be a small challenge for the public to take part in.

This could be anything from changing your bath products to natural eco-friendly alternatives to saying no to plastic bags at your local supermarket.

However, the biggest part of the campaign is the environmental education White Shark Projects will provide for the community.

It is organising fun-filled educational visits to schools and taking children on exciting outings to Cape Town, so they can learn more about our fascinating sea creatures at the Two Oceans Aquarium. There will also be educational beach walks and rock pooling so the children can learn about some of our local marine wildlife.

One of the main features will be the Swop Shop, where children from Masakhane in Gansbaai will bring recyclable litter they have collected from the streets of their neighbourhood.

The children are rewarded with points, which they can then “spend” on goodies such as toys, clothes and stationary. In addition to all of this, every day volunteers will take part in a 21-minute harbour clean-up in Kleinbaai.

According to Charmaine Beukes, Managing Director of White Shark Projects, the company has saved a phenomenal 12 000 plastic water bottles since last year.

White Shark Projects encourages everyone in the community to get involved in the 21 Days for the Ocean event and to aid marine conservation.
