Action list for young and old

With the festive season upon us, the Overstrand offers a range of fun activities for young and old. Here is a list of 10 fun activities:

1. The Hermanus parkrun every Saturday morning. It starts at 08:00 and is only 5 km long. Choose between two equally scenic settings. The one at SA Forest Adventures in Hemel-en-Aarde, Hermanus and the other in Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, Betty’s Bay. A bonus is that entrance to Harold Porter is free when you do the parkrun. A saving of R28 per adult. 2. Do some shopping or enjoy good food at one of our many markets. There’s one in every town from Pringle Bay to Gansbaai. The Hermanus Country Market even has a Wednesday evening market that is hit with locals and visitors alike. There are also many Christmas Markets currently offering stocking fillers and holiday gadgets. 3. Tone it up at our outdoor gyms. At Kleinmond’s main beach, Onrus or Mount Pleasant.

4. A free hiking route is never far away from you. It doesn’t matter where you are in the region. Put on your tekkies and take to the 60 km of intertwined hiking trails in Fernkloof Nature Reserve, the many miles in Kogelberg, or stroll along the coast.

5. Learn more about penguins when you you visit the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary in Gansbaai. They are open between 09:00 and 16:00 and visitors can watch the little guys feeding at 15:00. Entrance is free. Get there early to see how they prep their tuxedos for dinner. Stoney Point in Betty’s Bay is home to more penguins.

6. What would the festive season be without a wine tasting? Hermanus Wine Village has a daily tasting of 10 to 12 wines that’s completely free of charge.

7. For something sweet, organic and totally healthy head over to Stanford for a free honey tasting at the Overberg Honey Company.

8. Our libraries are a free source of information and entertainment. The amazing library staff are great at putting on special exhibitions and programmes. Kleinmond library has a weekly show of the seasonal fynbos thanks to the volunteers of Kleinmond Nature Conservation.

9. Playgrounds and parks for picnics, lazy days and children having fun.

10. Last but not least, our Blue Flag beaches. Summer is about spending time on the beach and in the surf and we have it all. All you need is your towel.
