Armed guard rescues injured duiker

A caring armed response officer took time out of his busy afternoon to rescue a duiker that was lying in a ditch next to the R320 road past the Camphill turn off.

Zolile Hoyi who was on patrol on 21 June noticed a number of vehicles had stopped with their hazard lights on. “I assumed there had been a motor accident, and stopped to investigate. It was then that I saw the animal in distress and I knew I had to do something to assist. Despite the rainy weather I decided to climb into the ditch through the mud and tangled greenery to get to the duiker,” says Hoyi, who assisted in taking the animal to a vet.

It is believed that the duiker was hit by a car before it fell into the ditch.

“A vet advised that we take the animal into the deeper bush area and set it free, as the severity of its injuries was not of such a nature that it needed urgent medical treatment,” adds Hoyi.

“I was blown away when I heard what had happened, and how Hoyi jumped to the rescue. It makes me immensely proud to see how our officers go above and beyond the call of duty. He has been with our company for six years, and I just know he has a long and bright future ahead of him. We have nominated him for one of our service awards, as a token of appreciation for the magnificent way in which he represented us,” says Marius Boshoff, Hermanus Branch Manager for Fidelity ADT.

Hoyi explains that he was just happy that he could help. “We need to look after all living creatures, animals too,” he concludes.
