Attacked with hammer
06 September 2018

An elderly couple sustained serious injuries when robbers attacked them with a hammer in their Vermont home in the early hours of Monday morning.

Captain Fadila September, spokesperson for Hermanus Police, confirmed that a case of house robbery with aggravating circumstances is being investigated after an 87-year-old man and his wife (83) were attacked. The elderly couple were reportedly asleep when the attackers gained entry to their home in Glasolien Street. September says, according to reports, the man was woken up by his wife’s screams.

“The suspect shone a flashlight into the woman’s face and demanded money. The complainant’s wife was hit on the head with an object. The complainant started to scream and managed to press the alarm to alert the security company. He was also assaulted,” September reported.

The thieves made off with the woman’s handbag, a television and cellphones.

“The suspects are unknown at this stage and no arrests have been made,” she added.

Eddie Holloway of OnVerWag Neighbourhood Watch says it is believed that the suspects did not have a vehicle. “The fact that one of the stolen wallets was found near the scene contributes to this suspicion,” he stated.

Holloway added that footage of the neighbourhood watch street camera project was carefully checked for any possible clues.

Another house robbery in Malmok Street, Vermont, was reported approximately two to three months ago. It is however believed that the two incidents cannot be linked as the perpetrators followed different modus operandi. No suspects have been arrested.

In light of the cold blooded attack on the vulnerable elderly couple the executive of the OnVerWag Neighbourhood Watch has urged the public to sharpen safety measures.

“Members are once again reminded to ensure that home and garage doors remain closed and locked and that suspicious persons or activities are reported,” reads a statement by OnVerWag NW.
