Baboons wreak havoc

Residents in Hermanus Heights arrived home last week Thursday to find their kitchen in a shocking state after baboons scavenged through it looking for food.

According to a Facebook-post the kitchen was left in a mess as food and other items were strewn all over the floor, after the baboons apparently gained entry through a window.

Pat Redford, spokesperson from the Hermanus Baboons Action Group, says that the baboons are becoming more dependent on human derived foods as the troops are starting to increase in numbers.

“We have noticed a rapid increase in baboon births. Over the last five weeks about four new babies have been born into the main troop. Several of the other females are pregnant or just very chubby,” adds Redford.

The Overstrand Municipality is waiting for their environmental mandate to manage baboons to be approved at the next Provincial Cabinet Meeting on 22 September. No funding may be authorised by the Mayor before this is concluded.Residents are requested to adhere to the bylaws for waste management. Law Enforcement may issue fines to residents who:. Do not have a baboon proof bin/baboon proof device fitted to their bin/s.. Dump refuse bags out of/on top of/next to bins, on the pavements, irrespective of whether it is refuse collection day or not.
