Beware of rockfalls

Motorists have been warned to exercise extreme caution when travelling along Clarence Drive after a number of reports of rockfalls along the scenic route.

Councillor Charmaine Resandt, head of communications for the DA Overstrand Constituency, posted a report on Monday warning the public about the danger of using the route between Gordon’s Bay and Rooiels.

The report, published by the City of Cape Town, states that a number of reports about rockfalls on the R44 (Clarence Drive) were received on Monday following bad weather the previous night. It added that the route remains open but warned motorists “to exercise caution”.

The Department of Transport and Public Works also released a statement declaring that Franschhoek Pass will remain closed until further notice after a rockfall on 22 June.

“A geotechnical investigation is underway to determine the extent and nature of the damage. Only once the report on this assessment has been received will it be possible to determine the next steps,” the department said in the statement.
