Both special ratings areas approved

Special Rating Areas for Hermanus and Onrus - Vermont was approved during a council meeting on 25 March.

“On behalf of the Hermanus Special Ratings Area (SRA) Steering Committee I am pleased to inform you that, following a full Council meeting on 25 March, the Hermanus SRA has been approved,” says Michael Farr, chairperson of the HSRA Steering Committee.

Farr expressed his thanks to the thousands of property owners in Hermanus for their strong support of this initiative. “In particular I would like to thank members of the Steering Committee of the HSRA, members of Hermanus Public Protection (HPP), and the many volunteers who gave so much of their time and energy throughout the establishment process.”

Caroline Gabb, member of the Onrus Vermont SRA Steering Committee, says the Onrus - Vermont SRA will be rolled out as per the application submitted, with the rate deduction being implemented in the new financial year which starts in July.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has prevented the Steering Committee to meet since the approval. Once the lockdown is over we will call for nominations from the community to stand as directors on the board of the new company which will have to be established, and a public meeting will be held.” According to Gabb the current situation confirms that Onrus - Vermont SRA has a vital role to play in the community. “We want to thank the Onrus and Vermont community and the Council of the Overstrand Municipality for approving this application,” adds Gabb.

Farr says the Hermanus SRA will work closely with Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) that has been appointed as the non-profit company (NPC) that will take the process forward to implementation from 1 July this year.

“This process includes an RFP (request for proposals) process to appoint service providers, the conclusion of a Finance Agreement with the Overstrand Municipality, the adoption of a memorandum of incorporation for the NPC, and the election of a Board of Directors of the HPP by members of the HPP,” says Farr. He concluded and says that residents can now look forward to a safer and cleaner Hermanus.
