Calling all tutors

With the pilot programme of the Hermanus Varsity Trust (HVT) due to start in August, the HVT is calling for volunteer tutors to help guide students through two short learning programmes.

Talks between the HVT and the University of Johannesburg’s Centre for Local Economic Development (Cenled) to offer two courses to launch the pilot programme are at an advanced stage. With a maximum of 50 students in each, the pilot will consist of two Cenled short learning programmes - “Introduction to Local Economic Development” and “Entrepreneurship” - starting in August and October respectively. The courses were chosen as they are ideal and will position HVT students to live, learn and work locally.

Tutorials, the human face that aids successful learning, are the heart and soul of the Hermanus Varsity Trust’s mission of providing higher education courses to empower the diverse communities of the Overstrand. Weekly tutorial sessions will provide registered students with the support of experienced individuals. This kind of support and guidance has been shown to be fundamental to students’ success.

“We can only offer tutorials because of the willingness of the remarkable people who live here to share their knowledge and experience with our students. “So, for our pilot, we are asking you to volunteer if you have the qualifications and/or experience to tutor on the two short learning programmes,” said a Varsity spokersperon.

“In response to the question, what kinds of knowledge and experience are appropriate for tutoring students in the two pilot courses, the short answer is ‘all kinds’.

“As far as academic qualifications are concerned, a Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, a suitable social science degree, or an MBA would be a good starting point. If you believe you have the knowledge and experience to help students and have the willingness and time to do so, please contact us.

“We really want to hear from you and, as a tutor, you will certainly make a difference in people’s lives.”
