Security officers in Hermanus have effected a number of arrests and apprehensions over the past few weeks, with the town’s network of CCTV cameras proving instrumental in many of the arrests. “We are proud to be associated with Hermanus Public Protection (HPP) and the committed men and women who patrol our streets. With the back-up of the high-tech CCTV network and the support of Hermanus Police, we are making a big difference in keeping everyone safe and secure,” says Marius Boshoff, Hermanus Branch Manager of Fidelity ADT. HPP is staffed and managed by Fidelity ADT.
In the first case, early on Friday morning 2 August, the CCTV operators at HPP spotted a group of people walking towards Westcliff. Their demeanour raised the suspicion of the operators, who immediately alerted one of their officers to engage with the group while police were dispatched. “One of the HPP patrollers kept the group talking until police arrived, who searched them,” Boshoff related. “Mandrax was found on one of the women, and she was taken into custody for possession of illegal substances.”
Meanwhile, in another incident earlier, a suspect was arrested after being spotted by CCTV operators in the early morning hours, when he was busy causing damage to a stop sign. It appears he and two other men were under the influence of alcohol at the time. The suspect was arrested on a charge of causing damage to state property.
In the third case, a group of men were observed walking along a street in the early hours with what appeared to be a few aluminium umbrella frames. The CCTV operators were able to direct HPP patrollers to where the group of men discarded the umbrellas, which were recovered and later positively identified as stolen from a local restaurant. “Cases of theft have been opened against the four suspects,” says Boshoff. In other incidents:. HPP responded to a report of shoes being stolen from a local shop by a group of minors. The group was located and searched by officers and the shoes were recovered. No charges were laid against them and they were released into the care of their parents.. A car allegedly stolen in Hawston was located by HPP officers outside a local pub. The owner declined to press charges against the suspect, who was driving the car, but police still took him into custody as he had other cases pending against him.. A suspect was arrested after he was found pushing a trolley loaded with crates, which he claimed he was given by a local shop. The shop was contacted to verify this claim, and they confirmed that the crates had in fact been stolen from their loading bay area.. Two suspects were arrested on charges relating to possession of illegal substances, after they were spotted by CCTV operators standing outside a nightclub. It was clear to operators that a drug deal was allegedly being conducted. When SAPS arrived on the scene, the two were searched and drugs were found in their possession.
