Clashes over illegal connections

The police kept a watchful eye on Monday as municipal workers repaired a damaged power cable on the edge between Zwelihle and Dubai.

Transformers in Dubai and Marikana informal settlements were reportedly damaged over the weekend due to overloading of the system as result of illegal connections, leaving residents in the area without electricity for six days.

Captain Fadila September, spokesperson for the Hermanus Police, reports that unruly members of the public started stoning the police and law enforcement officials who kept a watchful eye in the area while staff of the municipality’s Electricity Department on Monday repaired the damage.

“The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 on Monday 30 March. A police vehicle and a law enforcement vehicle were damaged when the crowd started throwing stones at the officials. Rubber bullets were fired to disperse the crowd,” she added.

A public violence docket was opened for investigation. No arrests have been made yet.
