Covid-19 brings changes to L2L fundraiser

With the arrival of Covid-19 the world as we knew it has changed. This is no different for the Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse (L2L) annual event. Instead of the usual walk, organisers of the annual fundraising hike have decided to split it into two walks for 2021; one in February, the second in May.

“As with everyone else, we have had to re-look at everything,” said Esmé Henderson, spokesperson for L2L. “It was decided that although we have made significant contributions to charity in the past we would like to expand on that.

“Previously we have asked charities to submit a presentation for a specific project that they plan to do. The walkers then voted and so the main and runner up beneficiaries were decided on. However, the other charities then fell away and missed out.”

Henderson says with the great need that has become even greater since the pandemic, L2L will now increase its effort to raise funds for these other charities that have applied for funding too.

“Previously our practice walks have been free,” she said. “We are now asking for a small donation of R50 per walker. However, registered walkers walk free of charge. These funds will go to the other charities.”

Henderson explains there will also be virtual walks so anyone can support L2L anywhere in the world.

“We encourage everyone in our community, including charities, sponsors, municipal officials and friends to join in the fun,” she said, “and meet the people who give their time and money to charities in our community.”

All bookings and registration is done through Quicket. For more information visit the L2L website.

The practice walks take place on Sunday 18 October at Fernkloof, 15 November at Grootbos, 6 December at Sopies Klip and 17 January at Betty’s Bay. The official practice walk takes place on 31 January.
