Farewell to a prominent, well-loved Rotary Ann

A thanksgiving service was held for the late Rotary Ann Sylma Edwards at the United Church on 3 August, which was conducted by the Reverend Dr James Gray.

The deceased, a much-loved member of the Berg en See Rotary Anns, and a resident of Hermanus for 27 years, had been ill for a short while. She was well-known for her charity work and hospitality to all newcomers in the town.

With her husband, Arthur, she played a central role in the community, raising funds for many charitable projects, including the Bargain Box and the monthly food parcels for the poor. She had a keen interest in finding help for those with challenges, and was a popular and respected figure of Hermanus, who always had a warm greeting and a smile for everyone.

Arthur and Sylma were joint recipients of the Rotary Paul Harris Award for Service above Self (in Swaziland), the first one awarded jointly to a husband and wife.

She will be missed by her daughters, Margot and Libby, and their families.
