Farm attack suspect caught in joint operation, charged

A 60-year-old woman was attacked and injured when a man gained entry to her home at Fairhill Nature Reserve, outside Stanford.

According to Captain Fadila September, spokesperson for the police, the woman noticed someone outside her window on Monday evening, 17 February at about 23:00.

She said the woman, who was at home alone, kept hoping the person would go away.

Instead, the man pulled the window open and shone a torch in, which revealed her presence.

The burglar bars, however, prevented entry, and he broke another window which did not have burglar bars and gained entry.

“The man then demanded money from the woman,” September said.

“The suspect assaulted the woman, causing injuries to her face, when she told him she did not have any money.” She said the suspect helped himself to the victim’s television set, cellphone and tablet before fleeing from the scene.

“The police were contacted, and the Stanford Community Policing Forum together with the neighbourhood watch’s Rural Sector members assisted in the search for the suspect.

“He was later found and arrested. Police found the stolen goods in his possession.

They also searched his house and found two firearms that are not licensed.

“The Stanford Community Policing Forum and the Rural Sector members assisted in a speedy manner.”

September added that assistance from community members is highly appreciated, especially by the Station Commander, who is grateful for their dedication to the fight against crime.

The suspect appeared in Hermanus Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
