Fest cleaners claim they were underpaid

A group of cleaners that took part in the clean-and-green project at the Whale Festival has raised concern about wages paid for three days of cleaning.

The group says it is not satisfied with the payment received and claims it was not informed about how much money would be received.

But William Ntebe, who coordinated the teams, said cleaners were informed they would be paid R20 an hour and that they would work in shifts.

He added that each worker had to fill in a register and sign in and out before and after completing their shift, and their payment would be allocated according to their hours worked.

“It was made clear what the requirements were days before the festival commenced,” according to Ntebe, “and workers were informed in person as well.”
