Festival of classical music

It is that time of the year when the villages of Greyton and Genadendal come alive with the sounds of classical music during the Greyton Genadendal Classics for All Festival.

The music festival, from 25 to 27 May, is described as a small, intimate and unpretentious get-together for music lovers from all walks of life. Its aim is to take audiences on an accessible classical music adventure, catering for the tastes of everyone, from the aficionado to the lesser devotee.

International artists, top South African classical performers as well as musicians from the Overberg region are all on the programme that offers three days of débuts, repertoire, ensembles, choirs and instrumentation. Ten concerts will be performed at the 2018 Classics for All Festival.

Performances include internationally acclaimed pianist Spencer Myer, the Zomari Duo of classical guitarist James Grace and flautist Bridget Rennie-Salonen and a reworked presentation of the music of David Bowie performed by the Ensemble Je Ne Comprends Pas. The soprano Brittany Hope Smith and tenor Selim Kagee will also perform with the Cantique Choir in the gala concert.

Various musicians from the Overberg, such as the gifted young violinist Maja van Dyk from Caledon, Genadendal Brass Band trumpeter Shaun Cloete, teacher of the OKOSI Project, will also showcase their talent. The choir of the Bereaville Primary school and the OKOSI Project group will be on stage with the Little Paganinis (the Muzukidz Project) in a special concert for children.

Visitors can also do some wine tasting, browse the many art galleries and indulge in the delicious country fare on offer in the local restaurants and street cafes – some of which will be offering classical busking – adding to the festive atmosphere in the villages.

Tickets can be booked through Computicket. More information about the programme, accommodation options and restaurants, visit www.classicsforall.co.za or contact the Greyton Tourism Office at 028 254 9414/9564.
