Festive spirit

Cheery lights and festive decorations including a collection of 71 Santa figurines make up for a lot of festive cheer in the Van Eyssen home in Sandbaai.

At the start of December André and Joy van Eyssen take out metres of twinkling lights and their huge collection of colourful Christmas decorations to start setting the scene for the Christmas Wonderland they have created at their home in Piet Retief Street for the past 14 years.

And each year the collection just gets bigger and better with the couple buying more new additions and their children sending them more festive trinkets from Norway and New Zealand.

Beautiful glass snow globes, colourful candles and candleholders, Christmas tree decorations, reindeer, sleighs, a wooden boat and carriage, a tanker, snowmen, animals dressed in Santa costumes, stars and snowflakes and Santas in all shapes, sizes and colours are put up inside and outside the house to add to the festive cheer.

The couple from Sandbaai opened their home to friends and neighbours last Tuesday for a “lekker kuier” before the official switch on of the lights. André can often be seen in his garden wearing his Santa outfit complete with a fluffy white beard and his red hat, just like a real live Santa.

Each year scores of people either drive by the festively decorated house or pop in to see and experience it up close.

André uses this opportunity to help raise funds for the Sandbaai Neighbourhood Watch by putting out a big box to collect donations.

“Last year we raised R1 002 for the neighbourhood watch and the year before that R1 000,” he reported with a jolly chuckle and a twinkle in his eye.
