Franskraal fire: No arrests yet

No suspects have been arrested in connection with the devastating fire that ripped through Franskraal in January despite a reward of R25 000 being offered.

Shortly after the fire that gutted four houses and damaged two others, Overstrand Mayor Dudley Coetzee offered a R5 000 reward for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who caused the fire. This amount was soon increased to R25 000 after businesses and individuals contributed R20 000 towards the reward offered.

It is believed that the devastation was as result of a fire that was started on Wednesday 9 January when residents of Masakhane protested after a number of illegal structures in the area were demolished by the Red Ants. The fire was brought under control, but gale force winds on Friday 11 January caused it to flare up and burn out of control in the direction of Franskraal.

Four houses in Franskraal Caravan Park were razed during the fire and two others suffered damage.

Lieutenant Colonel Winston Coetzee, Gansbaai Police station commander, confirmed that a case of arson is being investigated and that no arrests have been made yet.

Anyone with information about the case can contact Coetzee or Captain Danie Rautenbach on 028 384 0201. All information will be treated as confidential.
