Hemel-en-Aarde without power after cables stolen

Cable thieves wreaked havoc in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley last week, leaving a number of wine farms in the area without electricity for hours on end.

Peter Finlayson confirmed Bouchard Finlayson winery was also left without electricity for a short period due to cable theft, which occurred in the early hours of Friday 17 January.

He said: “Disruption was short-lived as the repair team was on site within 24 hours of the incident. We do have a back-up generator, which offered us ample support for office and admin functions.

“What is disturbing is that a pick-up truck with Eskom markings was noted on our property during the previous day (16 January). I am also curious to note why no rewards are on offer by Eskom for the recovery or for information leading to arrests for these crimes.”

Karen Bruwer of Bosman Family Vineyards confirmed her winery was also without electricity for approximately 26 hours following an incident of cable theft on a neighbouring farm on 22 January.

Captain Fadila September, spokesperson for Hermanus police, confirmed two cases of cable theft are being investigated. She stated the incidents occurred on 14 and 17 January.

“The complainant was reportedly called out to restore electrical problems when he discovered the copper cables had been removed,” she said. “Two conductor supplies were stolen.”

The value of the stolen cables is estimated at approximately R50 000.

No arrests have been made yet.
