Join the clean-up team

BirdLife Overberg invites the public to join its CleanMarine monthly coastal clean-up project this Saturday 12 May at Onrus Beach.

This coastal clean-up, done in collaboration with Milkwood restaurant and the children of the Recycle Swop Shop in Zwelihle, aims not only to clear the beachfront of litter, but also to create awareness of the dangers plastics pose to marine life and seabirds. The children got involved after Narina Howard of the Recycle Shop Swop won the first monthly Oystercatcher Hero Award, which honours community members making a significant contribution to the conservation of our coastline and estuaries.

During the monthly coastal clean-ups the contents of the litter are recorded and the results forwarded to Plastics SA and the Oceans Conservancy, giving the project an educational slant. The bags collected are deposited at the local recycling plant.

BirdLife Overberg chairperson Anton Odendal says the coastal clean-up campaign is one of six projects run by BirdLife Overberg as part of the CleanMarine project.

“Marine litter affects a variety of marine animals, notably turtles, seabirds and whales,” he pointed out. “Fishing lines and other fishery-related products pose a major problem as marine creatures may become entangled in it, leading to body parts being lost, drowning or starvation.

“For these reasons, the erection of fishing line bins was identified as one of six projects forming part of the BirdLife Overberg conservation campaign along the Overstrand coastline. The initial aim is to set up fishing line bins at sites along the Overstrand coastline.”

On Saturday, everyone will meet in the parking area at Onrus Beach at 08:00. The clean-up is expected to be done by 11:00 at the latest.

Participants should wear appropriate walking shoes, as part of the route will take them over rocks. Also, take along a backpack with something to eat or drink, and remember your hat and sunscreen.

Confirm your attendance with Elaine at mwjasser@mweb.co.za or Helé at birding@southernartceramics.com or sms to 082 455 8402 by Thursday 10 May at 15:00.
