Keep dogs on a leash, or...

Overstrand Municipality has warned dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash when out in public, or face a fine of R200 and the possibility of having their dog impounded.

This comes after an increasing number of complaints regarding dogs running off-leash in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.

The municipality emphasised dogs should not actually be allowed in the reserve, as it is protected by the National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act. “It has made an exception to allow pets in Fernkloof on the Blue Route as well as in the botanical garden,” Overstrand Municipality pointed out. “But for this allowance they must be on a leash and under control at all times.

“It is against the municipality’s by-law to have dogs off-leash in public places, and people who follow the law are frustrated by those who don’t.”

According to the municipal by-law dogs must always be on a leash and should be under control of the person holding the leash at all times when out in a public space.

Allowing a dog in a public place without being kept on a leash under control of a person will result in a fine of R200 and/or impoundment.

People who walk their dogs must have bags with them to pick up dog droppings.

Any contravention of this by-law can be reported to the Municipality’s Law Enforcement on 028 313 8996. Alternatively, send an email to enquiries@overstrand.gov.za, providing the licence plate or address of the person concerned.
