Little boy killed by car on R43

A little boy suffered a tragic end when visiting his parents in Gansbaai.

Nine-year-old Siyanda Ngathi was hit by a vehicle last Wednesday when trying to cross the R43 opposite the Gansbaai Clinic.

His older sister, Afika Ngathi, who witnessed the incident, hasn’t stopped crying since the accident, their father Khululekile Nduna Zamhaka said.

“I had to take her to the Eastern Cape,” he said.

Little Siyanda had come from the Eastern Cape the previous week to visit his parents, who live in Gansbaai. Nduna and his wife, Nokubonga Ngathi, had left the children at home when they went shopping on that fateful day.

“He wanted to go with, but his mother said he should do his washing and told him we would bring him KFC.

“He never got to eat his KFC,” an emotional Nduna said, bursting into tears.

The parents returned from shopping to discover the children weren’t home.

“I went looking for them, and that’s when I got the call to say there was an accident and my son was lying in the road,” Nduna said.

“When I got there he was already dead. I cried so much, I couldn’t talk.”

He then had the difficult task of sharing the news of their son’s death with his wife and relatives.

“Everyone was beside themselves – mother, sisters and cousins,” Nduna said.

He describes his son as a happy boy who loved soccer and dreamt of becoming a policeman “to arrest everyone who breaks the law.”

This weekend the family will travel to the Eastern Cape, where Siyanda will be laid to rest.

Lieutenant Colonel Winston Coetzee, Gansbaai Police commander, reports an accident occurred at approximately 13:40 on the R43, and that a little boy, Siyanda, died at the scene owing to the extent of his injuries.

He said: “It is alleged the deceased and his friends were busy crossing the R43 road from the Gansbaai Clinic’s side when he was hit by a silver-coloured Nissan motor vehicle travelling in the direction of the town. The driver of the vehicle is a tourist and a British citizen.”

The Gansbaai Police is investigating a case of culpable homicide.
