Local cheeses best in SA!

The Klein River Cheese Farmstead just outside Stanford won gold for its Klein River Havarti in the category for continental semi-soft cheese.

Havarti also picked up a prestigious Qualité Award. This is awarded to the best of the best in dairy and only 16 products out of 882 entries from 76 producers received a Qualité Award in 2019.

That ranks Havarti among the top 1.8% of all dairy products in South Africa, quite a remarkable achievement by a small family business.

“In preparation for the prestigious annual SA Dairy Championships, we decided to do our cheese tastings a little differently,” says Raymond Siebrits. “We started out with fun and informal tastings, the team bickered (like most families do), and after much debate, everyone had to cast their votes.”

However, in this process Siebrits says they found that the team members with the loudest voices and opinions, would influence and persuade the rest of the team, thus back to the drawing board.

“We then revisited and refined our methodology, closing with two very serious, sit-down, no-talking, judging sessions,” he said. “We even had an external guest judge to mitigate our biases,” he concludes.
