Local newspapers do well

The Boland Media group, which Hermanus Times is part of, raked in some choice awards at the recent FCJ Excellence Awards organised by The Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ).

This is the only national competition for local and community newspapers and, according to Fanie Groenewald, convenor of the panel of judges, there has been an increase of about 20% in the number of entries for the 2017 Awards, compared to 2016. About 130 journalists from more than 80 local newspapers in all nine provinces entered.

The awards ceremony was held at the Leriba Hotel in Centurion and we are proud to say that Hermanus Times journalists were under the top 10 finalists in the categories that are at the core of community journalism.

Community journalism is not for the faint-hearted when your credo is to cover the full spectrum of news in the community — warts and all, meaning the good, the bad and the ugly.

We are extremely proud of our seasoned journalist Bianca DuPlessis, who was a top 10 finalist in two categories: Journalist of the Year and Human Interest. Ex-Hermanus Times journalist and now full-time column writer Jan-Hendrik Coetzer was a top 10 finalist in the Columns category.

Our sister newspapers and colleagues raked in some top awards too. District Mail walked away with the Hultzer Trophy for the second year running (Category: Corporate-owned paid newspaper, circulation less than 10 000) and Marlene Jordaan from Worcester Standard walked away with the first prize for Editorial Comment.

  • Paarl Post and District Mail were 2nd and 3rd runners-up for Best Front Page.
  • Paarl Post was 3rd runner-up for the Cronwright Trophy (Corporately-owned paid newspaper, circulation more than 10 000)
  • Trish Goosen (Weslander) and Lise Beyers (Paarl Post) were in 2nd and 3rd place for Journalist of the Year.
  • Devidean Moses (Paarl Post) was placed 6th in the category General Photography.
  • Danie Keet (Eikestadnuus), Lise Beyers (Paarl Post) and Tasmin Cupido (District Mail) were in the top 7 in the category Editorial Comment.
  • Bianca Du Plessis (Hermanus Times) and Jamey Gordon (District Mail) were in the top 10 in the category Journalist of the Year.
  • Jan-Hendrik Coetzer (Hermanus Times), Marlene Jordaan (Worcester Standard) and Michelle van der Spuy (Eikestadnuus) were in the top 10 in the category Columns.
  • Tandy-Lee Marinus (Paarl Post/Worcester Standard) was in the top 10 in the category Sport.
  • Bianca Du Plessis (Hermanus Times), Lise Beyers (Paarl Post) and Nadine Williams (Eikestadnuus) were in the top 10 in the category Human Interest.
  • Trish Goosen (Weslander) was in the top 12 in the category Hard News.
  • The Alet Roux Medal is awarded to the best newcomer – a journalist with less than three years’ experience. Joint 3rd place was Tamsyn Jantjies (District Mail).
