Mnqasela responds to social media accusations

DA Overstrand and Overberg constituency head Masizole Mnqasela has hit back in a press statement after reports surfaced on social media accusing his son of raping five young girls in Cape Town.

In a statement to the media Mnqasela says he hopes that the police will do a thorough investigation to get to the bottom of everything in order for justice to prevail.

“I am on record for fighting gender-based violence in the country,” he said.

Mnqasela’s son is still a minor and cannot be identified.

“My family and I are not above the law and as such we will appreciate a swift investigation to get this matter to finalisation.”

Mnqasela adds that he was informed that the case was registered with the South African Police Service in November 2019 and that the matter is still under investigation. “My son appeared in court early this year. As such, the law must take its course as it should do for any other citizen of this country.”

Mnqasela concluded by saying that until the investigation has been concluded, the family will be making no further statements or responding to any enquiries from the media.

According to Captain FC van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, a case of sexual assault was reported on Saturday 16 November 2019 at Milnerton police station by a 16-year-old female victim. “The matter is currently under investigation by the Milnerton Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Crimes Unit. A 17-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared at the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 28 January 2020. The next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday 9 July.”
