New ‘weapons’ in fight against GBV in Overstrand

With the recent spate of gender-based violence (GBV)-related incidents in the Overstrand it’s good to know the Hermanus Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit has three new detectives to strengthen the unit’s fight against GBV.

Captain Buks Hanekom, Commander of the Hermanus FCS Unit, reports more detectives have been deployed at FCS units across the Western Cape to address the scourge of sexual crimes and violence against children and women.

Sergeant Natasha Gush, constable Ozuko Bayana and constable Tiaan Brooks joined the Hermanus FCS Unit at the start of September, bringing the total of detectives at this specialised unit to six.

Gush, originally from Mount Pleasant, spent a year doing general investigations at Lutzville Police Station and five years with Doringbaai police.

Bayana worked for the Gansbaai Visible Policing Unit for five years, and Brooks served in the Hermanus Visible Policing Unit before joining the FCS unit.

Hermanus FCS serves the communities of Struisbaai, Bredasdorp, Napier, Stanford, Gansbaai, the greater Hermanus area and Kleinmond.

“Having more staff members means that each detective has more time to dedicate to a case,” Hanekom explained. “This in turn will increase the quality of investigations.
