‘Our numbers are still increasing’

HERMANUS – The Overberg has now surpassed the 2 000 mark of confirmed Covid-19 cases, and Zwelihle in the Overstrand Municipality, had the highest number of cases.

Since Monday 20 July, the Overberg had a total of 2 401 confirmed cases.

With a total of 463 confirmed cases, Zwelihle has seen a great increase in recoveries to 296, with 162 active cases and a total of five deaths – although no new deaths had been recorded.

Grabouw, situated in the Theewaterskloof Municipality, is not far behind, with 431 confirmed cases and 291 recoveries. The town still had the highest number of deaths, 14, recorded within the Overberg.

Gansbaai, also situated in the Overstrand Municipality, had the second highest number of confirmed cases, with a total of 189 confirmed cases, 119 recoveries, 68 active cases and two deaths.

According to Roche Butler, spokesperson for the Overberg Health Department, screenings were ongoing. She said to date a total of 203 051 people had been screened during community testing and screening.

“Covid-19 numbers in the Overberg are still increasing, but less rapidly than before,” she said.

“Over the last week we have seen a slight increase in our smaller sub-districts Swellendam and Cape Agulhas.”

Butler said the Overberg was still equipped with a sufficient number of testing kits to conduct Covid-19 testing.

She added that in another effort to stop the spread of the virus, the isolation of infected people and quarantine of their contacts is also very important.

“Particularly in areas of high population density, it is vital that positive cases and their households are able to stay apart from their community, to stop the further spread of the virus,” Butler concluded.
