Overberg firefighting team takes bronze in Challenge

International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is celebrated on 4 May every year in commemoration of all the firefighters who lost their lives.

This year, George Municipality hosted the event on 4-5 May.

In addition to a motorcade through the streets of George, the Team Challenge, a meeting by the Western Cape’s Chief Fire Officers’ committee and a gala evening, a poignant “ringing of the bell” ceremony honoured those who have died.

One of the highlights of the two-day event was the 2018 Firefighter Team Challenge, during which participating teams had to complete a cycle of seven different stages in a race against the clock, while wearing full firefighting gear.

Each stage imitates a rigorous activity performed in the event of a real-life fire and tests both physical stamina and mental toughness.

This challenge celebrates the work of firefighters and is a gruelling display of skill, strength, discipline and teamwork, all the while following the proper procedures and safety regulations.

A total of 11 teams comprising firefighters from various fire departments in the Western Cape took part.

One of the teams was an all-female team from the Overberg District Municipality. Overstrand firefighters Shaun MacKay, Justin Brussel, Cecil Abrahamse and Brendan Hunter walked off with third place in the team challenge.

They were joined by Fire Chief Lester Smith and Assistant Fire Chief: Operations and Training, Angelo Aplon, as well as Ebriam Isaacs, Jaco Stemmet, Suzaan Stanley, Robin Valley, Jean Havenga and Siyabonga Khohlakala.
