Paddling for a good cause

Local resident Nicky Currie is taking on the Lion 500 games, to raise awareness for a cause she is passionate about.

Currie says she decided to take on the challenge to assist her friends Wayne and Kristi Spenser, who have a 5-year-old daughter who was diagnosed with leukaemia during the lockdown.

The Lion 500 games require one to complete 500 activities in one’s own time. Currie elected to complete her challenges in two years.

Her charity of choice is the Faces of Hope Foundation, which offers financial support for individuals suffering with life threatening illnesses, especially cancer.

After the challenges are completed a sum of the money generated will be donated to the Spenser family and the rest of the funds will go to the Faces of Hope Foundation.

On Thursday 1 October Curry took part in a one hour Stand Up Paddle (SUP) challenge at Onrus Lagoon.

During her second challenge Currie bravely took on the ocean waters at Grotto Beach and did a 500 m swim with Kürt Krause. Other challenges she will be completing include surfing and kayaking.

“Day one was emotional, and I chose to SUP, as I hadn’t done that before so I challenged myself as well,” said Currie. “There are 498 challenges left, and although they are all water sports I love, I never know what that specific challenge holds for me.

“There is no space for a bad day when I take on a challenge as I have to stay focused on the goal.”

Currie said Wayne and his family are close to her heart. “When my kids were very ill as babies I couldn’t imagine not having support. When I received the news about little Zoe, I thought how blessed I am to have two healthy children. I had to give back in a way, even if it just meant to support from the sidelines.”

Wayne Spenser said the fact that someone would do so much for awareness is heart warming.

“Paddling 500 times in a year is pretty tough,” he said. “I’m shocked at people’s kindness and their selflessness. Nicky’s attitude is awesome and we are grateful for the awareness that she is creating.”

Currie thanked Kürt Krause, Eddie Gey Van Pittius and Malan Bartleman from Suthern Surf, Sport and Cargo for their sponsorship and everyone else for their support.
