Prayers for services before festive season

Firefighters, Overstrand Traffic and law enforcement officials and members of Boland Public Order Police gathered for a special service held on Sunday to pray for and bless officials.

Overstrand deputy mayor Elnora Gillion and a number of Overstrand councillors as well as emergency rescue workers also attended the sermon at Living Waters Family Church in Hermanus. It was described by many as a very “blessed” service.

Pastor Christo van Niekerk also said a special prayer for Warrant Officer Clive Cloete who sustained serious injuries when he was attacked with an axe at Marikana during the violent riots in July.

A special collection was taken and the money was donated to Cloete and his wife who travelled from Paarl to attend the service.

Van Niekerk’s sermon was from Luke 15 and centred around the prodigal son’s return.

His message was that we as humans often fall and make mistakes but that the Father is all powerful and will lead you from the situation you find yourself in.

The service is hosted annually by a different congregation within the Overstrand to bless the men and women in uniform before the festive season starts.

Van Niekerk also blessed the deputy mayor and her husband as well as Overstrand Fire and Rescue Services Chief Lester Smith and Neville Michaels, the director of Protection Services.

Special prayers were also said for the uniformed officials’ families.
