Public pool not to open this season

Overstrand Municipality has confirmed that Hermanus Public Swimming Pool which suffered damage of millions of rand will not open this season.

The municipality however stated that it does not want this valuable asset to go to waste and there are plans to rebuild the structures and repair damages as soon as the insurance claim has been finalised. Earlier reports stated that damage at the facility in Mbeki Street was estimated at approximately R1,9 million.

“An insurance claim for the complex has been submitted. Efforts have been made to prevent access to the site by closing all entrances to the premises,” said Overstrand Municipal Manager Coenie Groenewald.

Plans to rebuild the library which was burnt down during the riots earlier this year are also in the pipeline. “Damage to the building is estimated at R5,8 million. Some of the furniture and books could be saved. The finalisation of the insurance claim will determine when the new project, at an alternative site, will commence,” Groenewald explained.

The municipality confirmed that all 150 beneficiaries who were allowed to erect structures at the emergency housing site in Swartdam Road are on the housing waiting list.

“A total of 32 toilets and eight taps were provided. Services will be extended to the adjacent area (on the edges of the transfer station). Available land behind the transfer station is being considered for further emergency housing,” Groenewald stated.
