Road worker dies tragically

A road worker was killed last week Wednesday when a truck reversed over her on the R43 road outside of Stanford.

EMR Private Ambulance Service received a call about the incident at 11:00 on 25 October.

According to EMR Private Ambulance Service the incident took place on a gravel section of the road where the woman was standing with a flag to regulate traffic.

Warrant officer Freddie Booysen, spokesperson from Stanford Police, confirmed that a culpable homicide case is currently being investigated.

“A woman was killed after a truck reversed over her. The driver was unloading gravel when he saw a hand pointing out on the left hand side of the truck. He immediately drove forward to see what was going on. When he got behind the truck he noticed that one of the women waving the flags had landed between the wheels of the truck,” says Booysen.

“She was pronounced dead at the scene and it is still unknown how she ended up behind the truck.”

Brian Domingo of EFG Engineers confirmed the incident but says that he cannot give any comment at this stage because the matter is still being investigated.

Correction

In the original article, published in Hermanus Times of 3 October, the article included the following paragraph: “Speculation that the woman wore earphones and could not hear the truck reverse was also laid to rest by EMR as no earphones were discovered on the body”. This paragraph has been removed and is incorrect. EMR has clarified that no observations regarding earphones was made on the scene. Hermanus Times apologise for this mistake and any harm it may have caused.
