Row over varsity location

Despite excitement over a new varsity for Hermanus, businesses in the CBD have raised concern over the impact it may have.

At a public meeting on Thursday, the Hermanus Business and Community Forum submitted a memorandum, signed by more than 100 members, objecting to the expansion of a varsity into the area occupied by the Tennis Courts and the Central Business District.

Delana Finlayson, who is on the Hermanus Varsity Trust steering committee, explained the infrastructural part (location) of where the administration and headquarters of the institution would be. She said it seems as if the issue of its location has been somewhat contentious, and she hoped to clear up some of these concerns.

“The synagogue, at the traffic circle on the R43 as you enter Hermanus, has been secured as the home of Hermanus Varsity,” Finlayson pointed out.

“The location was determined as it is close to shops, pharmacies, banks, the taxi rank (public transport), is central and can easily be accessed by everyone. It simply cannot be situated in a specific community, group or section.”

Professor John de Gruchy said a lot was said about the expansion of the varsity, but that it truly is a matter that needs to be cleared with the Municipality.

“We did not have any discussions with the municipality with regards to the expansion of the varsity to the tennis courts and CBD,” he said.

“Rather focus on the good that can come from this,” concluded De Gruchy.
