Rumour reportedly leads to march on R43

A false rumour was allegedly responsible for the march by Zwelihle residents on Friday 23 November.

The R43 was briefly closed on Friday when residents marched to the old circus grounds.

The rumour was that Gcobani Ndzongana of Zwelihle Renewal had been arrested and was being held hostage by the Overstrand Municipality.

“Someone had sent the wrong information to members of the Zwelihle community. The people believed it and got upset,” Ndzongana said.

He recounted after he was informed about the rumour, he immediately addressed the residents to assure them he was not arrested, nor being held captive. “We stopped the march at the old circus grounds where Overstrand Mayor Dudley Coetzee met with us. The matter was then resolved peacefully.”

Ndzongana added that the Red Ants were spotted in Tsepe Tsepe informal settlement in Zwelihle on the same day but were chased away by the community.

Overstrand Municipality confirmed that its housing office deployed the Red Ants to help residents that qualify for emergency housing move 37 structures. However, the move could not take place due to electrical connections not being switched off.

The Red Ants confirmed to Hermanus Times they were in Zwelihle on Friday 23 November, but stated that it was not for eviction purposes. “We should have relocated some residents, but we did not as members of the community informed us that the relocation process had already been arranged with the municipality,” the spokesperson stated. “Also we are only deployed to communities when it is arranged.”

. Ndzongana says the two-day peaceful shutdown will still take place, preferably in the second week of December. “The dates will be provided next week.”
