Stay motivated during lockdown

As South Africa prepares for the nationwide lockdown, local leaders urge residents to stay positive, despite the uncertain time ahead.

Ward 9 councillor Grant Cohen believes that although we are going through a difficult time at the moment, that it’s times like these when we need to come together like never before.

“We need to look after ourselves first, and by doing this we will look after each other. If everyone does their part, through things like social distancing, working from home if you are able to, looking after your personal hygiene and listening to the instructions given by the President and his Ministers at this time, we will get through this,” says Cohen. He also believes that this is not a time to cause unnecessary panic either. “Social media can be a wonderful tool to share important information, but please make sure the information that you are about to share is verified and correct. My plea at this time is for everyone in the Overstrand to stay informed, stay safe and stay healthy,” he adds.

Whale Coast Tourism Manager Frieda Lloyd is stunned by the response from small business owners to the realities brought by the Coronavirus. “I am overwhelmed by the way in which restauranteurs, accommodation establishments and small business owners have responded to the harsh reality and restrictions brought by Covid-19,” says Lloyd.

Pastor Mario Marchio of Bosko Ministries believes the root of anxiety is the lack of control. “Whatever I cannot control, in nature, in relationships, in my future, can cause serious anxiety. Anxiety produces fear, fear causes stress, stress depletes my immune system and makes me more vulnerable to various forms of sickness,” says Marchio.

He says the only cure for anxiety is hope, hope that someone bigger than me can control that which I can’t.

“First thing you need to know to fight fear is that God loves you. Yes, you the sceptic, you the heretic, you the agnostic, you the religious, you the sinner, God loves you. This is the moment when you have to decide whether you can control your future, or not. If not, please listen that God loves you not because you deserve it, but because He is love,” says Marchio.

He adds that people should have common sense. “Wash your hands. Be aware of contact. Sanitise. Wash your hands again. Obey the authorities. Don’t panic and remember, God so loved you that He sacrificed His only Son for you.”

Cohen believes that we will beat this virus. “We have seen that this virus does not take note of race, gender, religious or political beliefs. What we need now is social solidarity,” he concludes.
