Taxis operate amid scare

The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, recently announced that stringent measures are implemented at all airports and public transport facilities to ensure that the spread of the Corona virus is minimised. He highlighted that social distancing will immensely affect the operation of buses and taxis as well.

“While public transport will not be shut down at this stage, all measures will be taken to ensure that there is social distancing and minimum contact between passengers. We are still in talks about the operation of all public transport. Random testing of the virus will be applied at various taxi ranks and bus stations,” says minister Mbalula.

Petros Dumse who is a member of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association says the virus will have a definite affect on public transport.

“What concerns me is people may be walking around that have been affected with the Corona virus.

“They could climb into our taxis, sit next to other people, and touch the taxi’s doorhandles. A lot of people come into contact with a taxi’s doorhandles and sit and touch the inside of the taxi. This is why the virus could spread easily when people use public transport,” says Dumse.

He urges people to start using hand sanitizers and to wear masks and gloves when using public transport. “We need to be vigilant during these times. If you can stay at home, then rather stay at home,” he adds.

Dumse urges people who can assist the various taxi providers in and around Hermanus by donating hand sanitizers to them so that they can ask the passengers to wash their hands before getting into taxis.
