U3A talk on ‘prophet’

The Hermanus History Society presents a talk by Professor John de Gruchy on Monday 6 August entitled “John Philip: A prophet before his time”.

John Philip (1775-1851) was the superintendent of the London Missionary Society in South Africa, and one of the most influential figures in the Cape Colony during the early decades of the 19th century.

In his recent highly acclaimed book Dr Philip’s Empire, the Cape Town historian Tim Keegan writes: “If John Philip had succeeded in his campaigns for racial equality and justice, South African history would have been very different. So I think it is time to revisit his legacy.”

In a PowerPoint presentation, De Gruchy will explain the changes in the standing of Dr Philip over time and assess the evidence for a new look at his life and influence.

John de Gruchy taught for many years at the University of Cape Town and is the Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies there. He is also an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Stellenbosch. De Gruchy is a founding member of the Hermanus History Society.

The talk takes place on Monday 6 August from 15:30 for 16:00 at the Catholic church hall in Hermanus.
