Unpleasant experience for voters

A few glitches and issues were experienced on day one and two of special voting in Hermanus.

Certain voters in Ward 3 and 4 in Mount Pleasant had problems casting their special votes as their names appeared on lists at other stations.

DA Overstrand constituency head Masizole Mnqasela said that voters with online applications experienced the most problems. “The Electoral Act will need to be amended in the future to allow for home visits to have specific times. This will be best to ensure that the voter is not inconvenienced unnecessarily,” says Mnqasela.

Tuesday morning Mnqasela had to help a voter from Eastcliff to cast her special vote. “We waited for over an hour as she was not there yesterday when the IEC visited because she was in hospital. Had she been informed of the visit ahead of time she would have known and asked them to come through the following day.”

IEC officials in Ward 3 spent half of day two of special voting waiting for voters to come to the voting station at Overstrand Municipality.

“We are waiting on the IEC to send us the addresses of these voters because the police are willing to escort us to their homes so that they can also cast their votes. It is only six voters but every vote counts and every person has the right to cast his/her vote,” explained one of the officials.

“Other than one or two of the glitches, the special voting days were fairly managed in and around Hermanus,” says Mnqasela.
