World champ gets worthy send-off

World bodyboarding champion Tristan Roberts celebrated his birthday on Friday at Whale Coast Mall before jetting off to Portugal.

Best of Asia restaurant treated Roberts to an awesome sushi cake topped with sparklers to celebrate his 23rd birthday. The restaurant also gifted Roberts with a R500 voucher. To add to this, Whale Coast Mall general manager Maryke Potgieter, also surprised the bodyboarder with a number of other vouchers to spend at several of his favourite stores in the mall.

Roberts’ fans also had the opportunity to get his autograph and have their pictures taken with him. Each fan was given a ticket with a number that was entered into a lucky draw. One lucky fan won a board donated by Roberts. This board had been custom-made for Roberts in Panama.

On Saturday, Roberts sets off for Portugal where he will do some training ahead of the international bodyboarding season which kicks off in Brazil in May. He will then head off to France where he will shoot scenes for a video to promote a new board that will be released at the end of the year by his main sponsor, Pride Bodyboards.
