2020 Cape Epic also cancelled

The 2020 Absa Cape Epic has been cancelled for the first time since the first race in 2004, due to the Corona virus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The race organisers confirmed the news on Friday.

The event was due to start on Sunday, 15 March on Table Mountain and end on 22 March in Paarl after travelling to Ceres, Tulbagh and Wellington.

“Out of concern for the health and safety of our riders and other stakeholders, following recent advice received from the Western Cape Government, we have no choice but to cancel the 2020 Absa Cape Epic due to the Covid-19 (Corona virus) pandemic,” reads the press release sent out by the Cape Epic organisers.

Franklin Haman, a local rider from Hermanus, confirms that the announcement of the cancellation of this year’s Epic was a huge disappointment.

“However, I believe that the decision was made in everyone’s best interests. I especially feel extremely sorry for the international riders for committing and travelling to South Africa for the Cape Epic and now having to return home ‘not conquering the untamed’. It will be interesting to see what options will be offered to the 2020 riders. Anyway, whichever way, I will be back for the 2021 Absa Cape Epic along with my 2020 partner,” says Haman.

Race founder Kevin Vermaak says the decision was made with a heavy heart. “The health and safety of everybody involved in the event has to be paramount. At 18:00 on Friday we received the formal advice from government,” concludes Vermaak.
