Funky Fynbos Festival great

The Funky Fynbos Festival was held for the fifth time this year.

The festival, which took place on 22 and 23 September, proved to be a great event in terms of weather and turn out. “This year, we added the canoe race to the sporting line-up which was considered the start to an annual event set in the beautiful Uilkraals Valley on Lomond Wine farm,” said Dave Sawtelle, one of the organisers of the event.

Caron Lee, the other organiser, added that there were more than 400 athletes competing in the trail runs and Mountain Bike races and a bass fishing competition was also on the programme on Sunday.

Wine and beer enthusiasts and spectators lingered on the Lomond tasting room deck overlooking the dam.

“The [Gansbaai] Harbour events went off very well and we estimate that approximately 6 000 people visited the harbour activities,” said Lee.

A spin marathon kept athletes and spectators busy.

Visitors enjoyed the fynbos display, especially the spectacular clivias, which received special attention.

“The Miss and Master Funky Fynbos kept moms and dads engaged while the young hopefuls walked the catwalk,” Lee said.

“We also had a beer and wine tent, which offered local craft refreshments and was supported by local live music. Also, food and craft stalls were kept busy with the thousands of visitors.

“Next year we will continue with the two venues, Gansbaai Harbour and Lomond Wine Estate, and we are also planning to start with marketing very early to get the word out.

“The festival seems to have found its place in the annual sporting calendar already.

“We expect that it will get bigger and better and as we go forward and we will also find more exciting activities to add to the programme.”
