Galjoen Derby really great

The annual Galjoen Derby got off to a great start despite strong winds and extremely low temperatures on Saturday 30 June.

John Immelman, chair of Hermanus Shore Angling Club, says the day was very successful. “We caught 19 Galjoen and one Musselcracker, and the turnout was amazing.

“More than 100 people arrived at the prize giving, which was held at the Old Boys Club, after the Hermanus Cricket Club became unavailable at the last minute. We also had three anglers short of 90, which was really great.”

The weigh-in started at 16:00 and the angler and winner of the biggest Galjoen was Greg Miles, who pulled out a fish weighing in at 1,6 kg. The second and third biggest Galjoen prizes were awarded to Dylan le Roux (1,5 kg) and Patrick Carol (1,4 kg) respectively.

In the women’s category, Lisa Bruwer took the prize for catching a Galjoen which weighed 1,15 kg. Brian Macfarlane’s “Team Oubaas” won the team prize for the biggest bag of fish, weighing in at 6,5 kg and angler Alwyn Geldenhuys walked away with two prizes - one for the biggest individual bag of fish, which weighed 4,8 kg and the other for the biggest fish other than Galjoen, which was a Musselcracker weighing in at 4,05 kg.

“Everybody enjoyed the day,” Immelman said. “Special thanks go to Daleen de Kocks for preparing her famous curry and rice.” He thanked derby sponsors Steel n Pipe (Cape Town), Viking Aquaculture, Pro Heat, Amaroc Doors, Jean le Roux, CV Joint Centre, Industrial Suppliers, Multifix, Hair for Men, Bredell Family, Supa Quick and Le Fantastique Hair Salon.
